Guilty pleasures 03 Feb 2007

When Strummin’ With The Devil came out, I groaned inwardly. Van Halen was such a big part of my growing up, I couldn’t bear the thought of the band’s music being put to novelty use. I am glad to say I am wrong. Whilst I cringed at the initial video release of David Lee Roth singing Jump bluegrass-style, I can honestly say I don’t mind that version now. However, he does Jamie’s Cryin’ much better ;-).

Now, The John Cowan Band’s version of Runnin’ With The Devil is a different matter. Wow. Goodness, Eruption even gets an airing, bluegrass acoustic style!

Open your mind (and ears) and you might be really surprised. I know I was.

  2. I discovered this last year at the Didmarton Bluegrass Festival (www.didmarton-bluegrass.co.uk). Fantastic stuff - also look out as Diamond Dave is back, all offical according to the VH website. US tour only by the look of it!Andy Dempster#
  3. I saw that a full VH reunion is on the cards… except that it isn't. Michael Anthony won't be touring. There was a VH tour recently, featuring the Hagar-era incarnation of the band, but apparently MA was so badly-treated by EVH, he decided to knock it all on the head. A shame really.Ben Poole#
  4. The 'reunion tour' is US only, although I could quite fancy a trip out there for that. Saw Diamond Dave live two years ago and he's still got it…
