Wardrobe malfunctions

Ages ago I wrote a light-hearted post about so-called “American-isms”, that is, the practice of making up words or phrases when adequate terms already exist (hmmm… “ super-semanticisation” I think I’ll call it…) Well, there’s been a new development on this front — read on!

Yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday in the States, and MTV put on the half-time show. It featured Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, with the latter attempting to reprise the sauciness he perpetrated ’pon Kylie Minogue’s minute person at last year’s Brit awards. Unfortunately, it went wrong. This comment from Trousersnake made me chuckle (my emphasis):

“I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl.”

Splendid.

  1. Yeah, it must have been purely unintentional. To an engineers eye this bustier looks like it has been designed to work that way. JT should call it patriotic. That works as an excuse for everything. Just checking for terrorism. And look what he found? That is clearly a dangerous weapon. Cut a throat with it and then run the plane into Patriots defense.

Wasn't there also a streaker running around on the playing field that could not be shown on TV? A naked human! I mean, after all, if He had intended us to be naked, we would have been born that way.Volker Weber#
  2. Heh heh, yes, the American media really does seem to get its knickers in a twist over nudity… I remember watching movies after 9pm over there: plenty of gore and guns, but if there was a nipple to be seen, then the mainstream networks would futz the scene. Look at Sex And The City: it was only made because it was on HBO rather than Fox or whatever. Yet it’s on a normal channel over here, at around 10pm.

  3. I used to say: You can't show a naked breast, unless someone chops it off with a chainsaw. It is easier to show how people are killed, then how new ones are being made.Volker Weber#
  4. It appears that the 'malfunction' was that the entire thing didn't rip away. It's hard to imagine a 'mistake' quite like that one (complete with the pasties).Rob Wunderlich#
  5. Good call Rob… and yeah! She does have pasties in the pictures I’ve seen! Hmmm… there was me thinking she had silver nipples.Ben Poole#
  6. With that family, Ben, one never knows….Stan Rogers#
