It’s official: the UK government is nuts 26 Jun 2008

Not that there was really any doubt:

Harriet Harman has defended plans to make it legal for firms to discriminate in favour of female and ethnic minorities job candidates.

Tinker, tinker, tinker. And so we are left with ridiculous policies and unworkable laws. I think the UK has bigger issues to resolve than perceived inequalities in the workplace.

  3. Legal discrimination. Sounds like what we call in the US Affirmative Action… hiring to racial quotas. I quite agree with rd. Any discrimination is still discrimination. And it's not that we shouldn't discriminate as a rule - we should definitely discriminate between good and bad wines, good and bad mushrooms, and good and bad candidates for the job. The trouble comes when you try to codify and legislate people's business sense and instincts. Having a law that says you shouldn't discriminate is one thing, and fine it is. Having a flip side to that that defines "not discriminating" as specific types of behavior opposite to the intent of your law in the first place is quite another.Jerry Carter#
  4. Jerry: spot on. Along with a whole load of other stuff, affirmative action was something I studied at length in my twenties. I could see the flaws in it then, I can see them now. I just wish that these people who govern us would read the odd history book every now and then.Ben Poole#
